Junior Chemistry set: It was what first triggered my interest in science and technology, probably. My grandparents bought it for me when I was eight or so, when we were living in Japan, and Mum and Dad had to go back to England for a few days. They came back to me having somehow burnt a hole in the kitchen floor, but figuring out how to make things gave me a focus.

Teddy bear: I know it's clich├ęd, but I was given it by my parents when they brought me home from the hospital, and it was always with me while I was growing up. When we moved back to England, I lost it with all the packing, and I think I cried for a week. It was soon forgotten though when they got me a newer, shiner toys.

Other than that, I think I spent most of my time with books, especially encyclopaedias. There were toys, but nothing that stood out, and certainly nothing overly girly, though there probably was a few dolls in there. I suppose I didn't have a very conventional childhood, but it was more my own choice than anything. It shaped who I was, and who I am today.
